Bronze statue reclining Buddha
For Western collectors, the universality and aesthetic design of this sculpture in particular must have been a major attraction.
The static pose, closed eyes and stylised hairdo lend the figurine a hushed and mysterious expression.
According to the religious texts of the Mahaparinirvana sutra, this ancient statue shows the Buddha lying on his deathbed while undergoing a long series of meditations. It depicts the last of the four most important events of his life.
The three preceding were Buddha's birth, enlightenment and decision to preach.
