The Topographia Germaniae is the main work of Matthäus Merian der Ältere. He published this work jointly with Martin Zeiler (1589?1661) from Ulm, who was responsible for the text. The work contains about 2,000 illustrations and maps of cities, monasteries and castles and is considered one of the most important works in the field of geographical illustrations.
Matthäus Merian began work under the title Topographia Germaniae in 1642, followed by Theatrum Europaeum in 1635 and the world description Archontologia cosmica in 1638.
The Topographia Germaniae series was published by Merian's publishing house in Frankfurt am Main from 1642 to 1654 in 16 volumes, with later volumes to follow until 1688 on France, Italy and Crete. A total of 92 maps and 1486 copper engravings appeared with a total of 2142 illustrations; and it was thus one of the most voluminous editions of the time. After Merian's death in 1650, his sons Matthäus Merian the Younger and Caspar Merian continued the work.
