the three brides is a drawing by Dutch painter Jan Toorop, made in 1893. The original was made with chalk, pencil and charcoal on paper, measuring 78 x 98 centimetres. It is a depiction of three brides representing different aspects of women and is considered one of the first truly symbolist works in Dutch painting. The influence of the then emerging Art Nouveau and Art Nouveau is also unmistakable. In 1893, the drawing was exhibited at the Nederlandsche Etsclub and purchased by the art dealer Van Wisselingh. Helene Kröller-Müller bought it at an auction in 1919 and it is currently still in the collection of the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo.

Johannes Theodorus (Jan) Toorop (1858 - 1928) was one of the most important Dutch visual artists of the period 1880-1910.
Initially he painted in impressionist style, but through pointillism he developed into a symbolist painter.
He was also active as a portrait artist and designed ceramics, advertising posters and book bindings.
Dutch art nouveau is often associated with his work.
In the last 20 years of his life, he was strongly Roman Catholic inspired.
