Bookstores, publishing houses and printing flourished in seventeenth-century Middelburg. A very special book from that time describes the history of Zeeland at the time. It is still an important historical source: the Nieuwe Cronyk van Zeeland by Mattheus Smallegange. Also called the Cronyk van Zeeland or Smallegange's Cronyk for short.
Mattheus Smallegange was born in Goes and baptised there on 29 December of that year. He studied law in Utrecht from 1643 to 1649 and then made a 'grand tour' to France. On his return, he settled in Goes, where he became commissioner of the militia. He remained unmarried all his life.

Previous chronicles
In 1682, he began writing the Cronyk. This book is a summary of and sequel to previously published chronicles by Jacobus Eyndius, Johan Reygersberg and Marcus Zuerius van Boxhorn, among others. Where he could use them, Smallegange copied parts from the old chronicles. He himself collected even more material on the history of Zeeland. The research cost him a lot of time and money, but he received financial support from the States of Zeeland.
